Description:
The big river is some time called Big Mo, but where it begins is far from slow or as big. The Missouri river begins near the town of Three Forks,Montana at an elevation of 4000 ft., it travels a total of 734.2 miles when it meets the Missippi. Montana enjoys 223 miles of the river including several lakes formed fron the river, names such as Tolston, Canyon Ferry, Hauser, Holter, Black Eagle and Fort Peck, the last body of water before it runs into North Dakota. The best fishing is below Holter Dam near Wolf Creek. A lot of folks drift this stretch in every thing imaginable. This area is open with mountains on both sides. The highway I-15 running between Helena and Great Falls parallels the river most of time. At the small town of Craig you can cross over and follow the river on the old highway. There are lots of places to fish and take out your boat. The time of the year will bring big rainbows and brown trout. After leaving the canyon the country opens up as you near the town of Cascade. This country is farm and ranch. The river widens and slows down. The fishing changes too. From Great Falls to the Fort Peck the river seems slow but it moves along with very little tough floating water.Fort Benton is a great town to visit with many historical facts and figures. This was Charles Russell country! This area is remote and often few roads are available. There is lots to look at and wildlife is everywhere if you know where to look. Fort Peck Reservoir is a very large body of water being over 134 miles long and a tremendous shore line with lots of bays and coves. The fishing is very different from the upper river as about every type of fish including salmon. Big fish, big water. The upper river as it passes near Helena has homes located around Canyon Ferry and on larger acreage all the way through the canyon area. On and near Holter Dam there are homes if not on Forest Service land. Much of land on Forest Service land or Bureau of Land Management land is leased for long term. There are a number of homes on both sides of the river near Craig. They vary from summer homes to some very grand homes. Prices all through the area can vary from around $150,000 up to 7 figures. After you reach the Great Falls area this area is limited to riverside homes unless up high on the banks. Great Falls has some good buys and there are even better buys if you can find small acreages. Most of the homes in the eastern part of the state are farms or ranches so these are big acres and big bucks even though the price per acre is low. On the Ft. Peck Reservoir there are summer homes on the north side primarily. They are more affordable. This is near Glasgow, Montana |
