The Big Hole is known for its excellent fishing and hunting of big game and cold winters! The river begins in the Beaverhead Mts. and flows north for approx. 155 miles. From the elevation of 7340 ft. it drops to 4600 ft. near Twin Bridges. Hwy. 43 runs along the river. Wisdom, Montana is home to a small community of ranches and the Big Hole battleground. There are a few watering holes and restaurants. North of Wisdom towards Dillon is the Jackson Hot Springs. A fun place to eat, sleep and enjoy the hot springs.
From the wide open country the river fills with creeks and the Wise River. The best fishing is near Divide and Glen.There are grayling in the upper river and browns, rainbows and cutthroat are through the river.There are several take outs as you get closer to the community of Wise.
The easy way to reach this area is off Freeway 15 near Divide or Melrose. The river can also be found by driving east off HWY.93 S.as it crosses into Idaho and Lost Trail Pass.There is also a quick trip southeast of Anaconda near the Pintler Wilderness area on 273.
The Bighole River runs east and north until it reaches the town of Twin Bridges. Winston rods are built there. At this point the Beaverhead and the Big Hole run into The Jefferson river. This area was explored by Lewis and Clark and so named for the then President.
This country is generally made up of large ranches and a few smaller farms and recreation homes and cabins. You can spend multi millions or more for big spreads but there homes under $500,000 with smaller acreages. On the out skirts of Melrose its possible to find less expensive property.
The Big Hole is considered to be commercially navigable from the Steel Bridge to Divide, Montana.There are setbacks in each county established for property to be limited on building structures.
